High temperature process technology

Contribution to waste prevention, recovery of valuable substances and energy efficiency improvement

In the task group high temperature process engineering recycling processes play a central role.

For example, the processing of dusts from the steelmaking process in order to recover zinc and iron can be conducted in the Flash-Reactor. Since initial operation in 2010 several adaption steps have led to an important plant and process for the investigation of the treatment of said dusts. At temperatures of up to 1900°C 300 kg/h of dusts can be processed under reducing conditions. Since the atmosphere can also be oxidizing, the treatment of sewage sludge is currently investigated and a scale-up is in process.

In addition to the Flash-Reactor a pilot plant for the dry granulation of blast furnace slags (DSG) was erected. With the help of this process the high amount of energy in the slags can be used after tapping by cooling the slag with air after granulation. By heating the air, the energy can be made accessible for steam production.

In the course of the EU project RecoPhos (coordinated by the Chair of Thermal Processing Technology) a process was developed that uses an inductively heated carbon bed to recovery phosphorus from sewage sludge ashes. Phosphorus is an invaluable resource for life on the planet and has gained an immense amount of further attention of the EU since the completion of the project. Currently, a scale-up is conducted.
